Cottage Grove Speedway Readies For Grove Classic Weekend
By Ben Deatherage
Cottage Grove, Oregon- For fans of the Cottage Grove Speedway many of them were excited to see that the Grove Classic has returned to the famed ¼-mile clay oval for Friday April 26th and Saturday the 27th. One of the most anticipate 360 Sprint races in the spring it was last ran in 2011 as a American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region sanctioned event. It has returned to a non-sanctioned race like it has for the majority of its lifespan and is expected to have a very good car count.
360 Sprints won’t be the only class on hand for the weekend even though they are the only division to compete on both nights. Late Models and Street Stocks will be on hand for the action on Friday evening. On Saturday night the IMCA Modifieds will make their 2013 debut while the Hornets will also be in the house.
With one race in the books Paul Culp won the Late Model feature in the Season Opener on April 20th. In Hornet action Joe Maricle won the feature which featured several lead changes and a thrilling race.
Looking at historical results of the Grove Classic Roger Crockett has won the last eleven races dating all the way back to April 24th, 2004. The only year the event was on the schedule but not able to be ran was in 2007 when both days were lost to weather. Dale Smith has won two and Billy Nutter has a single triumph.
The weekend will mark the first 360 Sprint, IMCA Modified, and Street Stock races of 2013. Winners of the first race in those three classes in 2012 were Kyle Miller (360 Sprints), Troy McElroy (Modifieds), and Jeff Casto (Street Stocks). McElroy and Miller later went on to win the championships in their respective divisions.
Times and prices are the same for both days. Prices for the races are $12.00 for Adults, Senior/Military/Junior (13-17) $10.00, Youth (6-12) $5.00, and Children under the age of 5 are FREE. A Family Pass is offered for $35.00 which includes two Adults and up to four Youths. Pit Gates open at 2:00 PM, Front Gates 4:00, Time Trials 5:30, and Racing around 6:45.
The Cottage Grove Speedway has hosted fast and exciting action as far back as 1956. Since then the ¼-mile banked oval has been regarded as a place where fast times are set and plenty of side-by-side racing occurs. Regular classes include 360 Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, NW Extreme Winged Sprint Cars, Late Models, Street Stocks, and Hornets from the months of April till September every Saturday night.
