The Cottage Grove Speedway was back in action last Saturday June 22nd. The ¼-mile bullring rained out for the first time this year for the midweek show on Wednesday the 19th for the Wild Wild West Modified Shootout. Classes in action for Saturday’s event were the 360 Sprints, Late Models, Street Stocks, and Hornets.

The 360 Sprints main event had the crowd on their feet several times. With only one caution taking place the thirty-lap feature went pretty much incident free but the action was pretty breathtaking. Outside pole sitter Brendan Boyce of Eugene in the Boyce & Sons Landscaping and Building Materials/BC Motorsports #65 XXX was the early favorite as he seized the lead in the first lap.

Boyce would set a rapid pace over the rest of the field but would lose the lead to Rob Held as the front runners approached lapped traffic. Held, of Sutherlin, managed to retain the lead and stay out in front for the remainder of the event to put his Held’s Automotive/Budget Lumber #68 J&J in victory lane for the first time in 2013.

Original inside pole sitter Garen Linder of Central Point was second in the Linder Powdercoating/Rodgers Racing Engines #22 KPC followed by Seth Nunes of Medford in third in his Lucas Oil Products/Napa Auto Parts/Lonnie’s Auto Body #5N Maxim. The remainder of the top five finishers was Chadd Noland from Central Point in the Hedge Carter Continuous Gutter Service/Oregon West RV/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply #71 XXX in fourth for car owner Hedge Carter and Brendan Boyce in fifth.

Rob Held was quick time in qualifying with a time of 10.780 seconds. Heat race winners were Seth Nunes and Eugene’s Kyle Miller in the family owned Grant Springer Racing Engines/Gary’s Subaru Service/Finest Detail #10 XXX. Zack Spaulding of Springfield was the trophy dash winner in the Myers Logging/Armstrong Contract Cutting/Peterson CAT #21T XXX for car owners Sam and Tony Myers.

In the Late Model feature Brittany Ray of Beaverton in her #12B Swartz set the early pace until she got caught up in an incident on lap three. Eventually it would be Chuck Christian from Eugene getting to the front and putting on a good battle with Sweet Home’s Kye Frick. Christian and Frick would finish side by side at the start/finish line on the last lap with Christian edging out Frick for the win. It was the first career Late Model feature victory for Chuck Christian and the Redwood Northwest/Colleen’s One Stop Bird Shop #422 GRT machine.

Kye Frick would earn a respectable second place in the No Drought Potable Water Service #08 Swartz with the X-Factor Race Cars/All Pro Steel #42 X-Factor of Paul Culp from Springfield ending the night in third. Earning fourth place would be Creswell’s Blaine Taylor in the My Boy’s Slate Fired Pizza/Mueller Commercial Restaurant Services #18 MasterSbilt and Brittany Ray was fifth. Paul Culp was quick time at 14.023 second while Kye Frick won the trophy dash and heat race.

It was a battle between the “House of Crooks” for much of the Street Stock main event. Defending champion Darin Crooks of Cottage Grove would win the race despite battling hard with his own father Darryl. Once Darin Crooks had the lead secured Portland pilot Don Garrett III made it a race to the finish but Darin Crooks would beat him out at the line to pick up the victory. It marked the second win of the season for Darin and his #73 Nova.

Don Garrett III and his #75 Camaro would finish in second followed by the Stacy Graves Massage Therapy #00 Nova of Darryl Crooks. Dusten Henderson of Cottage Grove was fourth in the Fountain Gutters/White Water Well Drilling #0 Chevelle with Jeff Casto, also of Cottage Grove, completing the top five finishing order in fifth chauffeuring his Emerald Valley Reclaimed Timbers #4 Camaro. Casto had a great early part of the evening setting fast time (17.558 seconds) and winning both the heat race and trophy dash.

The Hornet main event was a caution filled affair. Five total stoppages would take place including one red flag. Josh Corley of Veneta was the car to beat in the #7C as once he took over the race lead he was out and running. Corley would cross the line in first place but unfortunately would not pass the post-race technical inspection and was disqualified. The win would be given to another driver from Veneta, Joe Maricle, for his fourth win of the season in the Ram Jack Foundation Repair #11 entry.

Chris Pierce of Cottage Grove finished in the runner-up position in his Material Fabrication/Racing Trends #28 mount followed by the teenager Evan Britton, also of Cottage Grove, in third driving the Gilkison & Dad Inc. #32 machine for car owner Kent Crump. The balance of the top five would consist of two Cottage Grove drivers, in fact two brothers, finishing in fourth and fifth. The industrial Finishes/Kimwood Corporation #34 of Mike Simmons would end his evening in fourth while in fifth was Jim Simmons in his Small Town Treasures/Nichol’s Napa Auto Parts #89.

The Cottage Grove Speedway returns to action this Saturday for Ladies Night on June 29th for the next installment to the 2013 season. All Ladies get into the races for FREE while classes in action will include the Northwest Extreme Sprints, Midgets, Street Stocks, and Hornets. The Hornets will be a very busy division as they are scheduled to compete in two features during the course of the night. For more information log on to www.cottagegrovespeedway.com.
