Fans at Oregon’s Cottage Grove Speedway were treated to a thriller as the American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region were on hand for the sixth round of the 2013 Bully Dog Performance Speedweek Northwest presented by Contingency Connection on Friday July 5th. Roger Crockett of Medford, Oregon would collect his third Speedweek win of the year and his fourth series triumph of the season.
At the start of the race outside pole sitter Shane Stewart of Pittsboro, Indiana set a rapid pace in the Finley Farms/CLT Logging/Rider Racing Engines #77 A.R.T. Stewart would blaze the trail on the high side and started to develop a strong lead before a caution on lap five would bunch up the field. It would be the one and only restart of the feature.
Roger Crockett, who started fourth, was able to get around the BC Motorsports/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply #2 KPC of Cottage Grove, Oregon’s Colin Baker for second shortly after the main event resumed action. From there Crockett and his SKS Racing/Al Parker Racing Engines/Champion Racing Oil #11 KPC would hunt down race leader Shane Stewart.
Crockett would catch Stewart and the two would duel for several laps. The two would enter lapped traffic and Crockett would manage to take the lead right around the halfway mark to lead the rest of the distance. He is one race away from capturing his fourth Speedweek Northwest championship which would tie him at the top of the all-time list with Steve Kent.
“It’s been an unbelievable week,” commented Crockett in victory lane, “it almost makes me speechless. We had such a rough Speedweek last year. We’ve had a great car all week. I can’t thank all my guys enough; everybody has put in one-hundred percent which gives me the possibility to win races like this.”
Shane Stewart was a respectable second while finishing third was Kyle Miller of Eugene, Oregon in the Finest Detail/Gary’s Subaru Service/Grant Springer Racing Engines #10 XXX after starting nineteenth. Puyallup, Washington’s Trey Starks was fourth in his Starks Timber Processing/Blue Dot Fabrication/MASCO Petroleum #55 Schnee with the top five being completed by the Meyer Electric/Kitsap Powdercoating #3 XXX of J.J. Hickle from Quilcene, Washington in fifth.
“We had a couple of close calls but that’s the nature of short track racing,” said Shane Stewart, “I guess I’m just a second place driver right now. I got to do my homework tonight and come back and finish one spot better.”
“We had an incredible night,” stated Kyle Miller, “I can’t thank enough my guys for giving me a good car. We wouldn’t be out here if it wasn’t for Grant Springer and Chris Schmitt. We had motor issues in Lebanon and they worked countless hours getting us back to where we needed to be.”
It was an Oregon sweep in heat race action as the winners were Jake Waddell from Roseburg in his Double R Powdercoating/BC Motorsports/Rocket Designs #10J XXX, Colin Baker, the Linder Powdercoating/Rodgers Racing Engines #22L KPC of Garen Linder from Central Point, and Eugene’s Brent Hoover in the Emerald Power Equipment/Affordable Auto Sales and Service/Oregon West RV #88 XXX. Clarksburg, California’s Justyn Cox was the consolation feature winner in the Lucas Oil Products/JRD Endeavors/Rodgers Racing Engines #5H Maxim for car owner Harley Van Dyke.
