Cottage Grove, Oregon- Although they have already competed in one race in 2014 we would like to give the Hornets an overview of their history as well as a look of things to come for the division this season. The Hornets enter their third year as a regular class at “The Grove” with seventeen events scheduled including the first ever 4-Cylinder Nationals on Saturday May 17th. 2011 was the first full season for the Hornets that would take place at CGS and since then there have been three different champions in three seasons.

“Last year the Hornets had a breakout year with a lot of cars because it’s a really affordable budget class,” commented Cottage Grove Speedway General Manager Heather Boyce, “they are really fun to watch and the Hornet Nationals in May will be a chance for them to shine and be in the spotlight.”

Last season Joe Maricle had a terrific year by winning five races and would post fourteen top fives in seventeen starts. There were eleven different feature winners in twenty different races with Maricle toping the win list with his aforementioned five victories. Taunton Swaim earned three wins while the other multi-feature winners included Josh Corley, James Deatherage, and Kolby Clay who each visited victory lane twice. Drivers with only one win would be Chris Pierce, Jim Simmons, Evan Britton, Matt Cordell, David Beals, and Justin Austin.

Tom Jeannot would top the points table to win the championship in 2012 even winning the last two races of the season. That year would see six different winners in ten races with Joe Maricle earning the most victories with a total of three. Tom Jeanott and Kent Crump were the only two drivers that would manage to win twice while Chris Pierce and Shawn Hand earned one win apiece.

With already one race complete in 2014 Taunton Swaim is the man to beat after his season opening victory on Saturday April 12th. The Hornets are next scheduled to be on hand Friday April 25th in the first night of the Marvin Smith Memorial Grove Classic.
