Some great racing would take place at the Cottage Grove Speedway on Saturday June 7th for Kids Night. During the course of the evening five lucky kids walked away with brand new bicycles apart of a giveaway contest that would take place. Classes in action would be the Northwest Extreme Sprints, Late Models, Northwest Extreme Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Dwarf Cars.

The Northwest Extreme Sprint feature witnessed Dave Hibbard of Medford take full advantage of his pole position starting spot to grab the early lead. The pilot of the C&H Motorsports/Tangible Real Estate Investments/Dave’s Carpet & Vinyl Liquidators/Southern Oregon Veterans Benefit #3 Zeitler cruised around the historic ¼-mile clay oval out in front however late in the race Cottage Grove’s Colin Baker would slowly but surely close in on Hibbard only for Hibbard to hold on and win his second feature of 2014. Hibbard is now the only repeat winner in Northwest Extreme Sprint competition.

Colin Baker would finish a close second for car owner Brian Crockett in the BC Motorsports/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply/Hedge Carter Continuous Gutter Service #83 John Boy while behind him in third was Dusty Redmond of Roseburg in his Redmond Trucking/Independent Thinning/Whit-Log Trailers #57 Rocket. The RCV Custom Coach Service/Cobalt Computer Services/William & Mathis Accounting/All Around Printing #4 XXX of Creswell’s Jesse Thistle came home fourth and fifth went to Vern Wheeler Jr. of Central Point in the Dave Hibbard owned C&H Motorsports/Tangible Real Estate Investments/Dave’s Carpet & Vinyl Liquidators/Southern Oregon Veterans Benefit #1 Maxim.

A thriller of a Late Model feature would take place for the fans last Saturday. Randy Martin of Eugene in the Team S.D.M.F. #88 Warrior would seize the initial race lead and seemed to have the top side of the track figured out. But the bottom of the race track would start to come in and Blaine Taylor would keep his faith on the inside line and take over the lead on lap three. Taylor would lead the rest of the distance in his My Boys Slate Fired Pizza/Taylor Restaurant Equipment/Mueller Commercial Services #18 MasterSbilt to win his first career main event at CGS.

The Cold Spring Resort/R.G. Remanufacturing/Superior Fuel Cells/Driving Force Graphics #36 Rocket of Shaun Mayea out of Bend was second, and had actually reeled Taylor in the last few laps, while Britton Donahoo from Salem crossed the wire in third chauffeuring the O&O Farms/Karcto Racing #5 MasterSbilt. The rest of the top five would see the Superior Fuel Cells/X-Factor Race Cars/All Pro Steel #42 X-Factor of Paul Culp from Springfield in fourth and Aloha’s Brittany Ray in the Brittany Ray Motorsports #12B Swartz was fifth.

The Dwarf Car main event was equally entertaining as Creswell’s Kevin Hicks tried to hold back all challengers. Hicks would lead a little over half of the race, in his Hicks Family Racing/The Wright Shop/Cindy Sew It/B-Rad Motorsports #78 Philpott, until shortly after a lap eleven restart Ryan Martinez from Portland would make a move down low for the top spot. Martinez would stay out in front for the rest of the distance and put his Auto Truck Wholesale/Van Raden Industries/St. John’s Tire Factory #9 M&M into the winner’s circle for the second time of 2014 at Cottage Grove and his fourth time overall between CGS and Sunset Speedway Park in Banks this year.

Brad Hicks of Creswell would beat out his dad for second at the line in his Hicks Family Racing/The Wright Shop/Cindy Sew It/B-Rad Motorsports #77 B-Rad while Kevin Hicks was third. Another father/son contingent would finish in fourth and fifth with the Drager Performance #88S M&M of John Chrisman from Albany followed by his son Dylan Chrisman in the Drager Performance #66S M&M.

Despite only two cars in the Street Stock event it was a nail biter from start to finish. Steve Begley of Eugene would keep his Nathan Anderson Dentistry/Platinum Hair of Creswell/Stacy Graves Massage Therapy #00 Nova out in front despite several attempts by Cottage Grove’s Even Britton to challenge for the lead. Britton would end up second in the Dot’s Trophy Shop/Ollivant Timber Management/Howell Logging/Gilkison & Dad Inc. #85 Nova.

In the Northwest Extreme Modified race it was David Schmidt from Eugene putting on a clinic. He would lead every lap but the first to put his EMS Truck Repair/Cindy Sew It/Oregon Concealed Training/Hunter Brake & Alignment #9 Pro into the winner’s circle for the very first time of his career. Jimmy Owen of Cottage Grove was second in his Eagle Racing Graphics/Dan Martin Excavating/Dirt Tracking #27 machine while the Akin Racing #54 Monster of Crow’s Scott Akin was third.

Cottage Grove Speedway returns to action for two nights starting with Friday June 13th and then Saturday the 14th for Relay For Life weekend. The American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region will be on hand for both nights while the support classes for Friday is the Northwest Extreme Modifieds and Hornets and on Saturday it will be IMCA Modifieds and Street Stocks.
