Kyle Hirst Scores Speedweek Northwest Round Five At CGS On Independence Day

Two things are guaranteed when Sprint Cars visit Cottage Grove Speedway, good car counts and great racing. Both would be on tap Friday July 4th for the fifth race of Speedweek Northwest as the American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region got back to racing after a night off. A total of thirty-six cars were on hand, the most so far during Speedweek, representing the states of Oregon, Washington, California, Montana, Arizona in addition to the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia as well as the Southland region of New Zealand.

When the main event would begin Logan Forler was a man on a mission. Originally from Orting, Washington, but now living in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Forler would master the high side of the race track in his Steve Forler Trucking/P.G.H. Excavating/Lucas Oil Products #2L Maxim. But as the race went along Forler would enter some heavy lapped traffic with about ten laps to go.

While negotiating some of the back of the pack Chico, California’s Kyle Hirst would make some key moves in traffic to seize the lead on lap twenty-six. Forler would go elbows up to try and run Hirst down but Hirst would beat Forler to the line on the last lap. It would mark the third win of this year’s Speedweek Northwest for Hirst and the Finley Farms/CLT Logging/Carlson Trucking/Rider Racing Engines #77 Maxim team owned by Scott and Jason Finley. It marked Hirst’s fourth career Speedweek win of his career, fifth ASCS-Northwest Region win with the series, and the first time ever visiting victory lane at CGS.

“This feels great, I love running this place,” stated a very happy Kyle Hirst, “I had a lot of fun driving this thing. I just got going there and my guys gave me a great car tonight. We’ll go out and do it again tomorrow.”

Logan Forler would be a respectable second followed by the Clyde and Marion Lamar owned Tri-C Machine/Butler Built Seats/Platinum Powdercoating/K&N Filters #3C Maxim entry driven by Chico, California ace Jonathan Allard. The balance of the top five would consist of Hanford, California youngster Mitchell Faccinto in the Stan Greenberg owned Western Metal Company/TSG Recycling & Disposal/Reitz Racing Engines #37 KPC in fourth while fifth place went to the Kovash Logging/Johansen Excavating/FK Shocks/Big Al Kids and Motorsports Foundation #33v A.R.T. of Henry Van Dam from Enumclaw, Washington.

Five heat races were contested with the winners being Henry Van Dam, the Snohomish Auto Parts/Ridge Runner Wings/Shaver Specialties #12 XXX of Jared Ridge out of Snohomish, Washington, Logan Forler, Salem’s Kyle Miller piloting his Automotive Sheetmetal/K&S Motorsports/Gary’s Subaru Service/R&M Recycling #10 XXX, and the Hedge Carter owned Huddle Automotive Repair/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply/Oregon West RV/Hedge Carter Gutter Service/Astro Titanium #71 XXX of Cottage Grove native Colin Baker.

Two consolation features were ran with the winners being Snohomish, Washington driver Reece Goetz in his Great Western Transport/Elma Lanes/Speedmart Inc./Wesmar Racing Engines #9R Eagle and Shane Forté from Junction City in the Oregon Fuel Injection/Guaranty Chevrolet/Lochmead Farms/Grant Springer Racing Engines/Davis Cabinets #26F Maxim.

The ASCS-Northwest Region has just one more event left of Speedweek Northwest as they will return to Cottage Grove Speedway on Saturday July 5th with Welt & Welt Inc. again presenting the action. Pit Gates will open at 2:00 PM, Front Gates open at 4:00, and Racing starts at 6:45.
