Cottage Grove, Oregon- Saturday, August 3rd witnessed another race with the Summer Thunder Sprint Series in the house at Cottage Grove Speedway. The Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifieds were back as the support division and added for the night were the Street Stocks and Hornets. Over forty support division entries were spread out across the three classes.
In the Mohawk Metal IMCA Modified feature, Eston Whisler was ultra-quick. The Otis native paced the field for the first ten circuits before being overtaken. Leading the eleventh lap was Evan Britton, from Cottage Grove, but unfortunately, Britton was collected in a wreck in lapped traffic on the next trip around the track. It put Eston Whilser back in front.
Whisler retained the top spot until lap sixteen when John Campos got around him. Campos, of Keizer, would shortly battle for the lead after a restart with seventeen circuits registered completed. Nick Trenchard, in the Rich and Nikki Biehn, owned entry from Klamath Falls, powered his way underneath Campos to take over the top spot.
However, Campos was not going to go into the night quietly. Campos got up on the wheel, and both he and Trenchard magnificently dueled each other in the closing laps. Trenchard came out on top to win his first victory at CGS in 2019 and is the tenth different driver to best the competition at “The Grove.”
John Campos was a respectable second over third finishing Aaron Sheelar, of Springfield. Posting a fourth-place result was Eston Whilser while Kevin Williamson, from Coburg, ended his evening in fifth.
In the Street Stock competition, Creswell’s Garrett Barth set the pace for the rest of the field. It was a short reign ahead of the other competitors as Cottage Grove veteran Kelly McDonald took possession of the coveted position on lap three. McDonald, in the Joan and Tom Langan, owned entry, blazed the trail the rest of the distance to capture his third Cottage Grove victory of the current campaign. He is now level with Roseburg chauffeur David Schmidt for the most triumphs in 2019.
Speaking of David Schmidt, he crossed the wire as the runner-up with Adam Applebee, of Eugene, in third. Springfield’s Daniel Ray, racing for car owner Michael Hollingsworth, was scored fourth while in fifth was Garrett Barth.
Lastly, Brad Moffett put on a clinic in the Hornets. Moffett, residing in Eugene, had a couple of brief challenges but kept his composure and held all of them at bay. It is Brad’s fourth win this year against the rest of the division.
Burnie Bryant, from Sutherlin, was a strong second with Eugene’s Mark Milligan a close third. The balance of the top five consisted of K.C. Scott, from Springfield, in fourth, and fifth finishing Adam Keegan, of Pleasant Hill.
Cottage Grove Speedway has yet another big two-night race weekend coming up with the Dwarf Car Nationals on Friday, August 9th and Saturday, the 10th. The support division on Friday is the Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifieds while on Saturday will feature Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, and Hornets.
