Cottage Grove, Oregon- It would be Dwarf Cars galore at Cottage Grove Speedway for the Dwarf Car Nationals. The event is held under the sanction of the Western Dwarf Car Association but hosted by the Northwest Dwarf Cars club. It is the first time the historical ¼-mile clay oval has run a national event.

Despite a brief weather delay the event drew over seventy entries, divided into three individual divisions, with teams from Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Nevada, and Colorado represented as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia. The Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifieds were also in action as the support division.

In the Dwarf Car Pro main event, it was domination from El Cajon, California’s Darren Brown. Brown seized the lead on the initial lap and, drove away from the rest of the field. A brief battle for the top position occurred around the halfway point in lapped traffic. But Darren held on to win the opening night of the Dwarf Nationals in his first Cottage Grove appearance.

Medford native Camden Robustelli worked his way up to second while Ryan Winter, of Galt, California, was third. Roseburg’s Chris Kress ended the evening in fourth while finishing fifth, via the B Main, would be Jessica Swanson, from Garden Grove, California.

Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Stockton, California chauffeur Jonathan Henry, Darren Brown, John Chrisman of Hillsboro, and Ryan Winter. Tigard veteran Shane Youngren won the consolation feature.

In the Dwarf Car Vet feature, it was all about Mark Biscardi for the most part. The San Jose, California pilot, held firm control of the lead for much of the race. A handful of cautions bunched up the field but Biscradi retained the lead on each restart. On the final lap, Kevin Miraglio made an extraordinary pass for the top spot on the final circuit. Miraglio, out of Pleasanton, California, was first to the stripe to win in his CGS debut.

Mark Biscardi was a respectable runner-up over third finishing Mike Reeder, of Placerville, California. Orangevale, California’s Brian Quilty managed to place fourth with Tim Fitzpatrick, now residing in Wheatland, California completing the top five finishing order, in fifth. Heat race winners were Kevin Miraglio, Biscardi, and Campbell, California native Eric Weisler.

Race fans witnessed a stoppage plagued Sportsman Dwarf Car main. Steven Schreiner, hailing out from Kalama, Washington, set the tone early. Schreiner lost the lead shortly after seizing control. The new trailblazer would be Jimmy Damron. Damron, of Gustine, California, was excellent on all of the restarts and stayed out in front the rest of the way. Despite the race cut short due to too many incidents, he parked it in the winner's circle in his first Cottage Grove appearance.

Steven Schreiner posted a second-place result while St. Helens young lioness Teagan Fischer crossed the finish line third. Central Point’s Trevor Davis was fourth and Mack Aceves, of San Jose, earned fifth. Scoring heat race victories were Schreiner, Davis, and Jimmy Damron.

Lastly, the Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifieds had a bit of an incident plagued feature as well. Grey Ferrando, from Stayton, paced the field early after two failed attempts to get one lap completed. Just past the quarter-full mark, Bricen James made a sensational pass to the front. James, from Albany, remained the for the balance of the distance to find victory lane for the fourth occasion at “The Grove” in 2019.

Grey Ferrando ended his evening in second while Springfield’s Jake Mayden walked away with third. Evan Britton, of Cottage Grove, recovered from an early race incident to post a fourth-place result with Eugene veteran Paul Rea finishing behind him, in fifth. Getting the job done in the heat races were Evan Britton and Paul Rea.

Cottage Grove Speedway is back in action on Saturday, August 10th for the final night of the Dwarf Car Nationals. The three classifications of Dwarf Cars will return along with the Hornets, IMCA Sport Mods, and Late Models.
