Cottage Grove, Oregon- For the second occasion in 2020, the engines would roar at Cottage Grove Speedway. Saturday, July 18th, had a full pit area at the historical ¼-mile clay oval. Six classes were once again on the card, including the Limited Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, and IMCA Sport Compacts. A big shoutout goes to the companies and people that helped out to ensure a full payout and had some bonus money up for grabs. They are FinishLine Graphics, Sunset Speedway Park, AM-1 Roofing, Swan Island Sandblasting, Forte Motorsports, Guaranty Chevrolet, River Road Automotive, Herz Precision Parts, AAMCO Transmissions and Total Car Care of Corvallis, and Jerry and Mandee Casey.
The Limited Sprint main event would be a caution plagued affair. Despite the many stoppages, the racing would be quite entertaining. Cottage Grove’s Kinzer Cox took control of the lead from the get-go. Cox would pace the field the entire distance, but it was not a pressure-free affair.
Several times, Kinzer would be slid on restarts, but he would reclaim the top place position each time. The victory marked the first time that Kinzer Cox has won this season in his first start of the 2020 campaign.
Central Point charger Jake Wheeler was the runner-up over third finishing Camden Robustelli, of Medford and racing for car owner T.J. Winningham. Tanner Holmes, from Jacksonville, got fourth while Winston youngster Kyle Alberding placed fifth.
Over thirty IMCA Modifieds would inhabit the house for their second race of the year. In the main event, Jake Mayden predominately had his way with the field despite a few instances where he was challenged. Mayden would score his second win of the season, but the first time he has won at Cottage Grove in 2020.
Keizer veteran John Campos wound up second with third place going to Bricen James, of Albany. Teenager Eston Whisler, from the coastal town of Otis, hit the wire fourth with Bend native Chad Groves grabbing fifth. Cottage Grove’s Curtis Towns and Aaron Sheelar, of Springfield, were the two consolation feature winners.
The Late Model feature would be a thriller. Medford’s Mark Wauge set the tone early and was the car to beat in the first six circuits.
From Otis, Jimmy Whisler took control of the top spot on lap seven and remained there for a good portion of the race until being overtaken by Preston Luckman, on the seventeenth trip past the flag stand. Luckman, from Coos Bay, would be the field’s trailblazer until lap twenty-five. It would be Mark Wauge briefly reclaiming the lead, but Luckman motored his way past him on the following lap.
Luckman held on the rest of the distance to win his first CGS victory of the season. Jimmy Whisler was second while Wauge got third. In the Jerry and Mandee Casey owned machine, Chad Groves, placed fourth over fifth-place Kye Frick, of Sweet Home.
The IMCA Sport Mods would witness a giant-slaying. Hunter Bloom was large and in charge of the main event. The Eugene racer took control of the lead on lap one and remained there after the final circuit. It marked the first occasion that Bloom has graced victory lane in the IMCA Sport Mod division at “The Grove.”
Roseburg’s David Schmidt put in a second-place finish while behind him, in third, would be Doug Coffman, also of Roseburg. Brookings racer Isaac Sanders was fourth over fifth finishing Jayson Nelson, from Springfield. Travis Pruitt, of Molalla, won the B Main event earlier in the program.
The Street Stock main event would be an entertaining one. Albany’s Rod McCombs took control of the lead and was quite dominant. The only real thing that slowed him down were seven stoppages. He would be challenged on many occasions going as far as losing the lead on lap seventeen. Creswell’s Graig Osborne was the one to get to the front only for McCombs to reclaim the position on lap nineteen. Rod McCombs went on to lead the balance of the distance to secure his first victory of the season at Cottage Grove.
Graig Osborne was a close second, followed by Creswell’s Garrett Barth, in third. Joey Cannon, of Vancouver, Washington, put in a fourth-place finish while capturing fifth would be Albany youngster McKenzie Lockhart.
Last but not least were the IMCA Sport Compacts. The class, formerly known as the Hornets, went caution-free in their main event, and it started with Veneta’s Joe Maricle, in the K.C. Scott owned machine, going to the front at the drop of the green flag. Maricle would inhabit the position until getting passed on the third circuit. It was Ricky Ashley, of Thurston, that managed to navigate his way past Maricle.
Ashley, racing for car owner Randy Kuhl, stayed out in front the rest of the way to win his first race of 2020.
Cottage Grove’s Kerry Cooper was second while Joe Maricle ended the night third. Barry Cannon, of Dexter, was scored fourth while finishing the race fifth would be Brad Moffett, from Eugene.
Be sure and keep a close eye on Cottage Grove Speedway’s website and Facebook page for upcoming dates of the 2020 season. The track would like to thank all racers and teams that came out to support a great event. Also, thanks go out to all of the fans that tuned in on the broadcast to watch all of the action.
