Cottage Grove, Oregon- While Cottage Grove Speedway hosted Round Four of Speedweek Northwest for the 360 Sprint Cars, they also had two other divisions on hand. As a result, Friday, July 16th, had two Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly program classes: the IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Compacts.

Eugene’s Paul Rea was the early race leader in the IMCA Modified main event. The veteran chauffeur set a fast pace until, unfortunately, his driveline spat out, on lap five, and sidelining him for the rest of the race. Inheriting the position was Curtis Towns.

Towns from Cottage Grove stayed in the coveted position for the balance of the distance despite feeling brief periods of pressure. Curtis Towns scored his second win of 2021 in Cottage Grove Speedway, KMJ Performance Oregon State, and Shaw Race Cars Western Region competition.

Teenager Eston Whisler, of Otis, was a strong second, followed by Coquille’s Ryan Baker, in third. The rest of the top five would be made up of Springfield pilot Steven Sturdevant and Paul Culp, from Creswell, in fourth and fifth.

For the IMCA Sport Compacts, young Madilyn Ashley set the tone in the early goings of that feature. The young lady from Jasper maintained first place until being overtaken on lap ten. Burnie Bryant was the one to claim the top spot for his own.

Bryant, of Sutherlin, dominated the rest of the main event to score his sixth win of 2021. All six of his trophies have been in earn at Cottage Grove Speedway and in KMJ Performance Oregon State action. Madilyn Ashley and Eugene’s Jack Vicari were second and third. Michael Kennerly, from Oakland, ended his night fourth over fifth finishing Dexter driver Bradley Martin.

Cottage Grove Speedway returns to racing action on Saturday, July 17th. The Western Sprint Tour 360 Sprints will be on tap again along with the IMCA Modifieds. Joining them all for the Saturday program are the Street Stocks. For more information, check out the track website and Facebook page.
