Preston Luckman Wins 2021 Timber Unity Logger's Cup At CGS; Forte And Cooper Also Earn Victories
By Stephanie Deatherage
Cottage Grove, Oregon- On Saturday, July 24th, Cottage Grove Speedway hosted the Logger's Cup presented by Timber Unity. The evening was also reserved for the Curt Deatherage Memorial Historical Night and featured the Class of 2021's induction into the Wall Of Fame. Additional classes were the Todd's Auto Body Sprint Cars and IMCA Sport Compacts.

From Portland and running for the Mitchell Family-owned entry, Joey Tanner took control of the lead on lap one of the $2,000 to win Late Model main event. There would be lots of stoppages, eight in total, but one thing that remained the same is that Tanner stayed up front.

However, the two-time defending winner would be bottled up in traffic with a few laps to go allowing a late challenge. Coos Bay driver Preston Luckman brought his car to call and overtook Joey when they both came to the white flag.

Luckman held on to win his first career Logger's Cup, and his second CGS triumph of the campaign. Joey Tanner was second with third going to Otis racer Jimmy Whisler. Bend veteran Rob Mayea and Estron Whisler, JImmy's son and also from Otis, were fourth and fifth. Scio's Steve Moore was the winner of the B Main.

Domination was to be witnessed in the Todd's Auto Body Sprint Cars. Junction City chauffeur Shane Forte was the one to conquer the competition. Forte led the field for the entire distance to win his second straight victory in the class.

Runner-up in the finishing order was to be Dundee's Justen McConville, with third going to Brian Crockett of Creswell. Sutherlin-based driver Pat Desbiens beat out Gold Hill veteran T.J. Winningham for the fourth-place position.

In the IMCA Sport Compact, Bruce Miller from Oakland took control of the lead initially. Miller remained in first until lap six when Sutherlin's Burnie Bryant overtook him. Unfortunately for Bryant, he was involved in an incident on the eleventh circuit.

Kerry Cooper was able to take over the role as the new race leader. The Cottage Grove charger of Cooper paced the competition the rest of the distance to win his first 2021 victory at Cottage Grove Speedway and in KMJ Performance State action.

Eugene's Brad Moffett and Bradley Marton, from Dexter, were second and third. Oakland native Michael Kennerly was credited fourth, followed by Joel Hazen in fifth.

Cottage Grove Speedway returns to racing with two nights on tap for the Mark Howard Memorial Modified Nationals. Friday, July 30th, will feature IMCA Modifieds, Royalty Core IMCA Northern Sport Mods, and Hard Tops. In addition, the Modifieds will have their Race Of Champions on this night. Then on Saturday, the 31st, the IMCA Modifieds, Royalty Core IMCA Northern Sport Mods, and Hardtops return along with the Todd's Auto Body Sprint Cars and Senior Sprints.
